TRIBES: A Dance in Light and Shadow is an evening-length choreographic work inspired by the life and legacy of artist Marc Chagall, particularly his series of stained-glass windows representing the Twelve Tribes of Israel. This project fuses contemporary dance, visual storytelling, and historical narrative into a powerful performance that explores the resilience of artistic expression under persecution. Choreographed by Artistic Director of JDT, Rebecca Levy, the piece uses Chagall’s luminous glasswork and personal history as a catalyst to examine issues of antisemitism, exile, identity, and the enduring role of the artist in the face of cultural suppression. Designed to resonate with diverse audiences, TRIBES creates a space for dialogue around history, remembrance, and the relevance of artistic freedom today.
